Chitsai ('rainbow') Lake
Chitsai Lake is situated on the border line of Hualien County and Nantou County. It had several other former names such as Deer Lake and Chisin Lake, but one day a famour mountaineer Mr Wen-An Lin inadvertantly spotted the lake at dawn. It was reflecting variant rays in seven different colours against the lake surface, filling the summit with the brightest of all light. Thus, Chitsai, meaning 'rainbow', is entitled to this phenomenon.

Chitsai Lake is the highest lake in all of Taiwan with an altitude of approximately 2980 meters. Towards Chitsai Lake from Shueili, it takes around 4 to 5 hours of drive to the submontane entrance, and another 3 to 4 hours walk to reach the lake. Despite the long journey, on the way you may discover the beauty of a primitive forest, as verdant and lively as if it were still young.

In order to maintain this beauty, please do not abuse the environment as well as the wildlife creatures if you ever decide to witness the marvel of Chitsai Lake.
