Heading southward along the Dawan Beach before the Kenting Chateau Beach Resort, at the end you will find an ancestral shrine, which is the so-called Babao PRincess Temple.
There live many different legends of this Babao Princess. According to the Hengchun Magazine, during the year of 1867, an American couple was shipwrecked and unfortunately murdered by the Guezaijiao Tribe. The American lady, Mrs Hunter, was the only lady on the ship, and they found 8 unique treasures on her body, thus Babao (literally meaning 8 treasures) was named after the commemorative temple.
Another legend says that the damsel in distress was actually the Dutch princess, that's why in the temple there is a calligraphical scroll dedicated to her. In summary, no one really knows the real identity and nationality of this mystery lady.
The story of Babao intriguess many visitors to Kenting as it links to several international legends itself. It also let us realize, that Kenting is the first area of Taiwan to have made touch with overseas community.
