In Hualien there lives a legendary wood-carving artist for 20 or so years, Mr Ping-Yang Tsai. Mr Tsai studied music during college because of his marvellous singing potential as well as his piano skills. However, he chose to become an English teacher as his first career. Then at the turning point of his life, the talented Mr Tsai, in his thirties, touched down in the field of wood carving and without any teaching he started engraving his newly-found passion onto the pieces of wood until he realized that he couldn't stop his chisel.
Mr Tsai usually carves interesting aboriginal patterns and motifs, presenting a totally different style and design, winning over many art-lovers' hearts. All over his living room and on the walls, hung his masterpieces. Ranging from reliefs of furnitures to cutleries, everything tells you something about Mr Tsai and his knowledge on Taiwanese aborigines.
At the moment Mr Tsai holds wood-carving lessons at Tsi-zhi University as well as folk-singing classes to elderlies at other times. Notwithstanding his busy schedule, his Wood Carving Hall is still his main focus as every part of this building was manually constructed by him. Anytime if you walk past the hall on Zhongxin Road, you will be able to feel the hard-working presence of Mr Tsai. So take your time as you stroll and admire the artworks of sweat and of passion.
