Located south of Miaoli County, Sanyi village is surrounded by mountains. There are few roads that link the local community to the outside world. More than 50% of the villagers do wood carving and wood furniture for living. The wood, mainly camphor wood, is readily obtainable from the nearby Tashia Mountain, Alishan, Fungyuan, Choshan, Chotung etc.
The uniqueness of these local sculptors is their ability to carve life-like animals and Buddhist figures from giant tree roots or strange-looking branches.
