Suau-Hualien Highway stretches from Suau Yilan County in the north to Hualien County which is in the south. The entire highway was constructed along the eastern side of Central Peak and coded as No. 9 Provincial Route. After 10 years of 3 expansions section by section, the entire highway was opened formally on October 25th 1990 as a two-way route. This road had lived through the Qing Dynasty, Japanese colonization period, and the era of the Republic of China; totalling a history of 118 years. It developed from a footpath, to a carriage path, and ended up as the two-way lane of today. It is considered as the representation of the history of Taiwanese highway.
Eversince 1874, along with the widening of the winding Highway, 10 tunnels were also added; therefore, the mileage was shortened to 112.4 kilometers. As far as the scenery along the road is concerned, Suau Harbor look out, Nanfangau, the charming Dongau Arc Bay, Wushihpi Natural Coast Forest Reserve, Luodachun Monument, Ewen Cliff, Guanyin Waterfall, Ziming Waterfall, Gufeng rift valley, Chingshuei Cliff and so on provide nice pit-stops. Among them, the Chingshuei Cliff Road has been changed to a sight-seeing trail for tourists to view this magnificent cliff. Additionally, the Taroko National Park Headquarters has set up another sight-seeing area in Heren for tourists to view this spectacular Heren Bay.
