This architecture of plain grey tiles and white wall lies next to Jiamin Elementary School, waiting for its admirers. The entire Buddhist Temple seems like a small Japanese garden, creating a peaceful and tranquil environment. Entering on the green path filled with natural fragrance, you will reach the Buddhist Temple at the end of the walk. The magnificent architecture is in good harmony with the lawn and pine trees; elegant, solemn and quiet.
Cheng Yen Master, an effeminate woman and a heartful gymnosophist led numerous believers to spread and enhance the kindness of mankind, devoting themselves to poverty relief, anxiety relief, sickness relief social service work.
Although Cheng Yen has experienced various tribulations and has to bear great responsibility on her shoulders, she is never care worn. On the contrary, with peaceful and solemn expression, dressing in loose grey frock, she shows to others as an adorable figure. Cheng Yen Master, with lenience and benevolence, helped the poor and the sick for a great charity cause.
Since 1966, under her leadership, starting with the 5 jiao saved up by each and every of the original 30 believers, they established the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation. After 38 years, it has developed into a huge charity organisation with more than 4 million members. As a native Buddhist charity institution, it has done numerous effective deeds during the past 38 years. Under the influence of millions of such monasteries, support increased pervasively as children, families, even enterprises donate generously to show a helping hand!
Tzu Chi missions include: charity, medicine, education, and culture combined to be called the four fields of compassion. In addition, international relief, bone marrow donation, environmental protection, and community volunteerism have been operating simultaneously; known as one step with eight footprints in Chinese culture.
--Charity internationalization-----long-term care of families in poverty, emergency rescue, domestic concern, international disaster relief …Based in Taiwan and looking out to the rest of the world, Tzu Chi walks towards the global village with the great love and prays for the world to be in peace for as long as time allows.
--Medicine generalization-----regional hospital establishment, bone marrow database, Tzu Chi Disabled Children's Rehabilitation Center, nursing center, free diagnosis and treatment in remote mountain areas and offshore islands… The Tzu Chi medicine, gives its respect to each unique life.
--Education completion----springing from love, attention to both positive ability and function shall be paid. From Kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, university, to research institute, Tzu Chi raises the next generation earnestly.
--Culture deepness----community service, organization concern, environmental protection...the Tzu Chi members are willing to devote themselves to promoting harmony and peace within the society! Magazines, books, broadcast, TV, internet...etc, through this media Tzu Chi regards purification of people's minds as one of its unique cultural feature.
Among the four great anguishes, the illness is the first and worst. Tzu Chi accumulated its experience in poverty relief of more than ten years and discovered the concept of disease is the root of all pain, the origin of all poor. In order to solve this illness problem, the master made her mind to set up Tzu Chi Hospital in Hualien. She spent seven years to appeal and seek for support, and underwent many hardships. Just like the master described if painstaking effort is visible, each brick is made of painstaking effort. Tzu Chi Hospital opened on August 17, 1986. It advocates respect for life and patients come first medical attendance in Hualien. Owing to the promotion of medical and service quality, it has become the Health Center in the eastern Hualien. In May 1999, the hospital was recommended as the first norm medical center and passed the ISO international authentication in March 2003, the only one of 18 medical centers in Taiwan to pass such authentication completely. With advanced medical facilities and renowned doctors, Tzu Chi Hospital provides the effective service for the people of the east.
Located on the Zhongyang Road, the Tzu Chi Cultural Park, including Tzu Chi medical Center, Jingsi Hall, Jingsi Bamboo Room and Tzu Chi University, shows determination in developing its four main aims charity, medicine, education, culture. Standing within the walls of this elegant yet simple structure, visitors can feel the tranquility in admist the bustling lifestyle of the city. Tzu Chi Jingsi Hall which expresses the benevolence and world relief spirit of Tzu Chi followers is located at the right-hand side of Tzu Chi Hospital. It preserves the historic imprint of Tzu Chi of which construction was egun on August 17th 1986. The main architectures are: the thirteen-story Sermon Building, Tzu Chi Monastery Square, Fahua Ramp, International Conference Hall, Thanks Hall, Tzu Chi World, Buddhist Cultural Relic Exhibition Hall, Religious Library, Historical Data Hall, the Buddhist Scriptures Cabinet, Lookout Tower.
Tzu Chi Jingsi Hall is a historic museum of Tzu Chi, depicting how a native Buddhist nun came to unify different classes, different races, different nationalities, different believers to practice the essence of mercy and develop the great love of the human race.

Travel towards north from Hualien Railway Station, turn left to Zhongyang Rd., you will reach Tzu Chi Hospital, Memorial.
--Route upwards north: Travel along No.9 Provincial Route. When you see the sign which is next to Sincheng couty Elementary School and at the opposite of Guangan Palace, turn left.
--Route downwards south: Travel toward south along the No.9 provincial route, turn right to lane when see the opposite sign of Guangan Palace.
