Shanlinhsi (Chinese Fir River) Forest Recreation Area is closely linked to Nantou’s center of tourist attractions. It is situated at Hsitou on the way to Alishan. Rising at 1,600 meters over an expanse of some 40 hectares, the climate here is of temperate climate. In summer, temperature averages at 20 degree C and winter is mild with no snowfall. Chinese Fir and hemlock dot the entire countryside and blanketed the entire area in green. Liewlungtou is a small village on the way from Hsitou to Alishan. In olden days, the locals here are loggers. They used wooden horses or light transport vehicles to load the cypress wood from the mountain. Then, the logs were transported to Hsitou on rails made from cable wires. Its logistic affords panoramic views of Changhua County and Hehuanshan.
Shianyinpo (Contrast Village) is another village located at the 9.5 km to the entrance of Shihchai Tourist Path. At an altitude of 1,500 meters, this spot affords splendid views of Phoenix Mountain Range and the villages scattered around the Hsitou area.
Choshih Sacred Wood – Located at mid way between Liulungtou and Antin River, about 12 km from Hsitou, this tree stretches across 21 meters space, it measures 60 meters high and 7 meters wide. For more than a thousand years, it stands tall and still on this woodland.
Shihchinzhi (Stone well cliff) – these are rocky cliffs surrounding the wells, about 20 of them. The wells are located at the Shihlin River’s rocky riverside. Through ages of erosion, the riverbeds form into ditches with deep wells. Next to the wells is a stone with the inscription “Maternal Love”. This serves as a reminder to people that in time of difficulties, there is always love from the mothers.
Chinlung (Green Dragon) Waterfalls – With water cascading from a height of 116 meters creating clouds of mist and truly majestic sight, this waterfall is only 10 km from Shihchinzhi.
Forest (Sanlin) Park – located at Zhiyin Village the southeastern slope, this park provides pleasant resting place for the visitors.
Tientiyen (Heaven and Earth Eyes) – these are two giant holes at the mid-slop of the mountain, like a pair of human eyes.
Yen-an (Swallow’s home), Shihnanchuan (heath river) – at Chailin River, a distributory stream flows from the mountain rock wall through a heath. Thus, it is call Shihnanchuan. At the right side of the water source, there is a big hole, which is the swallow’s nesting place. As such, it is called Yen-an. Water droplets flow out of this hole forming picturesque pearl-like curtain.
Shunglong Rock – Including Wushung Waterfalls and Suilientung Waterfalls, this scenic area affords fantastic sights of cascading water from the 10 meters high mountains and rock holes.

By car : From Wangtien Highway Interchange exit to Chungsuan. Keep left and then connect to No 14 Provincial Route till Chaoton. Connect to No 3 Provincial Route till Tingpin and then turn to No 151 Provincial Route, passing Luku and you will reach Hsitou Shanlinhsi. If you go north bound, from the Shihlo Highway Interchange, exit to Touliu. Turn to No 3 Provincial Route and go northward. Follow the same route as above and you will reach the destinations. By bus : From Taichung, take the Lienyin Express Bus bound for Hsitou or Shanlinhsi. Alternatively, at Jushan, take the Yuanlin Express Bus bound for Hsitou Shanlinhsi. There are special buses from Hsitou to Shanlinhsi. |
